Phytate is the main storage form of phosphorus in plant-based feed ingredients such as corn, soybean meal, and wheat. Monogastric animals (poultry and swine) cannot efficiently utilize this phytate-bound phosphorus. Adding phytase breaks down phytate and releases available phosphorus.
